The Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy program meets the educational requirements for licensure in the state of Minnesota as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT), preparing students to integrate theory and practice as skilled, independent practitioners in diagnosing and treating mental health issues. Combining classroom knowledge and a one-year practicum field experience, graduates have found employment in a wide variety of settings (e.g, mental health clinics, educational or religious institutions, community agencies, schools) with diverse client populations.

Attend courses in the Marriage & Family Therapy program at Argosy University/Twin Cities during the week or also on weekends!

Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy Program Delivery Format
The Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy program is offered in two different formats to meet student needs. Either format allows the program to be completed in as little as two years with a fall or a summer start. Spring starts will take a minimum of two and one half years.

Weekend
Each course meets on two weekends separated by 3 to 4 weeks, with the exception of the Practicum Seminar that takes place on a weekday. Class meetings are generally Friday evenings (6 p.m.-9 p.m.), and Saturday (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m.-5 p.m.). Additionally, Professionalization Groups meet during the students' first year before their Friday class (4 p.m.-6 p.m.).

Weekday
A weekday format has classes meeting once per week during the weekday or evening. Students take two classes each semester (three hours each class for fifteen weeks), not including the professionalization groups (one hour per week) or Practicum Seminars (two hours every other week).

Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy

The M.A. MFT program at Bethel Seminary is designed from the perspective of family systems for persons who would like to work with couples and families as a licensed marriage and family therapist or an unlicensed counseling professional in a variety of congregational and community settings.

Post-graduate Certificate

The licensure preparation sequence is designed for students who have a graduate degree in a helping profession and who wish to be licensed to practice marriage and family therapy. With the completion of specialized MFT courses and supervised clinical experience with couples and families, such persons can earn a post-degree certificate that helps them meet the academic requirements for state licensure.

Course Work: Course work meets the academic requirements for licensure as a marriage and family therapist in most states. Additional supervised clinical practice and successful completion of the licensing examination would typically be needed to obtain actual license. Marriage and family courses meet during the day on Mondays or Tuesdays. Biblical, theological and historical courses are taken as part of the present seminary offerings in the daytime or evening.

Personal Formation: A strength of Bethel's MFT program is an intentional focus on the self of the therapist. We utilize a multi-faceted, invitational process with many points of entry, both formal and informal. Students are encouraged to reflect on their faith, the theoretical and clinical dimensions of their practice and their personal experiences. This reflection serves as the basis for the ongoing process of integration that we believe is essential for maturity as a person and as a professional. Reflection group participation, satisfactory completion of the practicum readiness process and a senior integrative project are necessary for completion of the program.

Program Duration: A fulltime student with no outside obligations could complete the proposed program in two years, including one summer. It is strongly recommended, however, that students structure their programs over at least three years in order to accommodate other work and family responsibilities and to maximize the practicum experience. Students have a maximum of six years to complete the M.A. degree.

OVERVIEW:
Marriage and Family Therapists work in a variety of mental health settings providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of psychological interpersonal, social adjustment, or similar problems. They may provide therapy for individuals, couples, families, groups, or other combinations of people.
REQUIRED COURSES:
No specific undergraduate courses or majors are currently required, but as the graduate school admissions have become more selective, preference is given to students with CDFS and other mental-health related majors, minors, or course work. Courses in Systems Theory, Human Development (child, adolescent, life-span, etc.), Statistics, and similar areas would give an applicant a further edge.
